British Universities & Colleges Sport, more commonly known as BUCS, is a hugely popular nationwide sporting programme. A whopping 100,000 students take part in BUCS competitions, which through term time, run weekly across universities.

In October, it was revealed that they would be holding a new and exciting event called BUCS Big Wednesday. Even more exciting, was the news that Leeds Met has been chosen as the host.

The first BUCS Big Wednesday will take place on Wednesday 20th of March 2013, bringing together the finals for fourteen different sports, including both the men’s and women’s football, tennis, volleyball, indoor cricket, fencing to name but a few.

BUCS main aims are to enhance performance, competition and participation within the student experience. This brand new event is sure to do that, giving students a bigger incentive than ever to train hard and be ready to showcase their skills at BUCS Big Wednesday. It also offers the benefit of bringing together a huge range of different sports in one place, meaning both competitors and spectators will be able to enjoy the finals and support their peers all on the same day.

Jake Donaldson, a student at Leeds Met and a member of the fencing team told me:

‘The fencing team always want to do well every year in BUCS. The fact the final is being held at Leeds Met has spurred us on even more to achieve highly.’

And it’s not only the students who are looking forward to the event. Emma Smethurst, Student Sports Representative at Leeds Met, said:

“Sport is very close to the hearts of our students at Leeds Met, so being able to play our role in such a fantastic, prestigious event is a great honour and something we will execute to the highest of standards.”

Here at Leeds Met and The View, we know how incredibly lucky we are to have the facilities that we do and the decision to hold BUCS Big Wednesday at Carnegie only highlights this. So, whether you play lacrosse, netball or badminton, or just want to enjoy watching the fierce competition, make sure you show up and help Leeds Met live up to our shining reputation.
